Flowers, as we all know, have always been a language of love and affection. Lovers have used flowers as a medium to communicate their feelings and intentions by creating small bouquets that spoke volumes – symbolically. Floriography is actually a full-blown study of the language of flowers and it has been around since Victorian times, where expressing love or emotions was less direct. On receiving a bouquet of flowers, a romantic pursuit might have to refer to the flower dictionary (a common reference in the Victorian library) in order to interpret the message being sent. Like, cumin signifies fidelity, dandelion faithfulness, and ivy, wedded love. There is another side to it; while a spider flower indicated an invitation to elope; a gardenia indicated secret love. Colors played a crucial role too. A blue hyacinth promised constancy, but a yellow one told them you were jealous.
We at Fleurette try to weave this thought while designing and delivering our flower bouquets too. In fact, some of our popular floral arrangements are mostly symbolic. Here’s a sneak-peek into our modern day floral dictionary.
1. Roses
Most of us already know what roses stand for. Roses are a universal symbol of love and affection. However, every color rose has its own meaning. Yellow roses symbolise friendship, while the white roses symbolise hope. A red rose signifies ardor, passion, undying love and is magnificent in a fall or winter bouquet. They are also called the “lovers rose.” Orange rose bouquets in shades of coral or peach symbolise the joy that a relationship brings you whereas, pink roses symbolize grace, admiration, gratitude, comfort and joy.
2. Carnations
These sweeties come in a variety of shades – pink, white, red, yellow and scarlet and have been known to inspire many artists, poets and authors. White carnations symbolise purity and luck whereas, pink ones symbolise gratitude. The light red carnations symbolise admiration and the dark ones stand for love and affection. The yellow ones symbolize disappointment and rejection while the purple ones denote capriciousness.
3. Liliums
Lilies are part of the genus Lilium, which is known as the group of “true lilies”. Lilies signify devotion or purity, though meaning can vary by type of lily, culture, and color. The Chinese use lilies in weddings as they believe they are tied to 100 years of love. Similarly, they are also tied to good luck. Christians associated lilies, especially Madonna lilies, with the Virgin Mary. Lilies mostly grow in white, yellow, pink, red, and orange. The white lilies symbolise purity and virtue while the pink ones symbolies prosperity and abundance. The red lilies stand for passion and the orange ones for confidence, pride, and wealth. The yellow ones are often associated with thankfulness and desire for enjoyment.
4. Chrysanthemums
These beauties come with a variety of meanings across the globe. The Asian community consider chrysanthemums as life and rebirth making them a perfect gift for birthdays and baby showers. The European community consider chrysanthemums as an expression of sympathy. In America, people often associate chrysanthemum as a flower that signifies respect and honor. Moreover the color of the chrysanthemums also affects the meaning and the purpose. For instance, a red chrysanthemum is a symbol of love, a yellow chrysanthemum blossom is often associated with negligence of love or sorrow, and a white chrysanthemum is a symbol of loyalty and devoted love.
5. Orchids
These exotic beauties woven in your flower bouquets signifies refinement, love, luxury, beauty and strength. White orchids symbolize innocence and purity, as well as elegance and reverence whereas the pink ones symbolise femininity, grace, and joy. Yellow orchids symbolise friendship and new beginnings, and the purple ones symbolise royalty and admiration. The orange ones speak of pride, enthusiasm, and boldness.
